LEGO Robotics in Elementary STEAM/STEM

We utilize two LEGO kits for elementary students:

  • LEGO WeDO 2.0
  • LEGO Education SPIKE Essential

Students in grades 4K-5 work through a LEGO challenge. 4K uses just bricks, while Kindergarten – 5th grade use the robotics kits. Each grade level works through one of the already put-together LEGO lessons. We use our iPads to access the storylines, building instructions, and coding program.

  • 4K: Robot Alarm
  • 5K: Glowing Snail
  • 1st: Carnival Ride
  • 2nd: Exploring Inaccessible Places (Rover)
  • 3rd: Pulling (Pullling Machine)
  • 4th: Speed (Dragster)
  • 5th: Drop and Rescue (Helicopter)

There’s much to like about LEGO Robotics at the elementary level. You learn a lot about your students as they work in collaborative groups of course, and if you don’t normally have them use assigned roles for group members, it works well to do so for this type of activity. Groups who finish early, are invited to modify their creations, which is incredibly interesting to see as a teacher!
