A great way to let loose, and still learn! Students in grades 4K-5 work with Cubelets. For 4K and 5K I limit the number/types of cubes available to them. For this challenge, students are encouraged to:
- Build a bot that wiggles, jiggles, rolls, slides, etc.
- Dress up their bot for the dance.
- Join the dance and watch their bot — making modifications as needed/desired.

We used an iPad to play songs from the following playlist. Our speaker was connected via bluetooth.
The next time we do this challenge, I’ll bring the dance floor down to the actual floor for grades 4K and 5K. Robot drops happen more frequently at those grade levels. We have six sets of Cubelets and borrow six more from our afterschool program. These are great robots and I really like that they make kids think about cause effect in both directions:
- I want my robot to _________, so I should use these cubes in this formation.
- My robot isn’t acting the way I want it too, so I should remove the ______ cube(s).
Additionally, we will NOT do this challenge during statewide testing week (or the two weeks following). I was thinking that it would be a great break for my 3rd-5th graders, but neglected to remember that we share a wall with Special Education classrooms, AND that our ceilings are drop ceilings and sound travels. We modified our volume, and surrounding teachers were forgiving. But…yeah….a different week would have been better all around!
