Hot Wheels Speedometry Challenges

I purchased one of the Speedometry STEM Kits from Hot Wheels off of eBay, after realizing that Hot Wheels was no longer offering their grant program for them. It came with a lot of vehicles and several key accessories we didn’t already have, like clamps and loop making components. Since then I’ve ordered several additional accessories from Dollar Tree (launchers, longer tracks, and a different type of loop making pieces).

Each grade level works through their own challenge, making this as yearly challenge for us.

  • 4K: Long, Longer, Longest
  • 5K: Make it Move!
  • 1st: Jump It (1)
  • 2nd: Bumpers to the Rescue
  • 3rd: Farthest, Fastest, Safetest
  • 4th: Rounding the Curve
  • 5th: Jump It (2)

Several of the lessons that we do come from the Speedometry Curriculum. The Kindergarten lesson comes from STEAM Powered Family. The rest were ideas based off of what I know about my students, their grade level standards, and the materials we have access to.

At the close of a challenge, I reflect on future changes that I’d like to potentially consider. For this Hot Wheels challenge, I plan on making the following changes the next time we do it. I
– move 5K lesson to 1st
– move 5K physics lesson to Hot Wheels
– buy launchers (and other different accessories?)
– change 3rd title to STOP that Car!
– change fifth title to NOT IMPOSSIBLE (loop, hill, curve)
