My students are currently working with editing checklists. I find that they are holding themselves more accountable for the learning that’s taken place over the course of the year. Over the years I’ve created a few different editing checklists for my emergent writers. Earlier in my teaching career, I would create a wall chart for all to use as a point of reference (below). I have come to realize that an editing checklist is more usable if it’s near the student! Read on for pics and downloads.
My current preference is a simple glue on or sticker type checklist that gets placed on their lined handwriting paper. It’s a visual reminder of the expectations.
Students simply write and then check for things that can be fixed or made better.
I’ve created other types of editing anchors for my students.
- bookmarks
- labels
- wall charts
- interactive whiteboard charts
One year I created a very large wall pencil anchor chart after my visit to several classrooms in Sheboygan, WI. They had them throughout their school. I created my wall chart using yellow, gray, pink, and black tag board. The images showcased on the pencil were regular copy paper sized. They could be changed out to “grow with” my class as they progressed as writers. I even created student versions of the anchor chart for their writing folders.

Your self editing sticker idea is terrific! It’s so easy! No more stapling little pieces of paper to writing! Thanks so much!
