PBIS Rewards
We are a PBIS school. As a part of our Tier 1 behavior system, we have established our school-wide expectations – Be Safe, Be Respectful, Be Responsible. We also have a school-wide behavior matrix. Each classroom develops a classroom behavior matrix as well. When students respond positively to behavior expectations they are rewarded with BEAK Tickets. These can be saved and used in the Eagle’s Nest. Guest Teachers give out yellow (2-point) Eagle Tickets, and all other staff members give out blue (1-point) Eagle Tickets. We also give out WOW cards (worth 2-points) for “referral free” (ODR) students every quarter. In addition, every quarter we have a PBIS Quarterly Celebration as well as Superstars of the Month.
Successful Transition Incentives
On occasion, I offer an incentive for successful transitions. When students transition from one part of our day to another, it is imperative that they transition efficiently, quickly, and quietly. At the start of the transition, I always review the expectations and directions, ending with where the meeting spot is (where they go after they finish cleaning, gathering new supplies, etc). The following are incentives I use from time to time. Having an incentive gets kids focused on, and motivated to do a job-well-done, getting to the meeting area rather than chit-chatting and socializing their way through the transition.
Mystery Person
I don’t implement this until 3rd or 4th quarter. It’s a nice addition to add to our 2nd Semester Routines, and it also fits in nicely with our PBIS Boosters (retraining students regarding school-wide and classroom expectations). The Mystery Person is only known to me. Sometimes we have one MP, other times we have several MPs per day. It just depends on which area or areas we need to work on to develop better behavior habits.
Rewards are selected by the MP if they earn it. I only reveal the MP’s face/name if they have earned a “YES” for positive behavior. I use these boards in conjunction with our CHAMPS board (also introduce 3rd/4th quarter).
Wrist Smellies
I think I found this idea on Pinterest. Gotta love Pinterest! Smellies are given for random student rewards and planned student rewards. Smellies are given on student wrists. Students LOVE gettting Smellies!
Special Days or Activities:
To help establish that we are a TEAM, we might occasionally have a class reward to earn. To be honest, I most often find myself doing this in very tough situations. Usually where the entire class needs help establishing a sense of common purpose – – we can work together for the “good of the whole” – – so to speak. In the past I’ve had students earn the letters “B-A-L-L” for recess balls, when they’ve demonstrated positive recess behaviors. I’ve also had them earn the letters for “ICE CREAM SUNDAE” or “PENNIES FOR PIZZA” or “PENNIES FOR P-DAY”.
