When we come back from Winter Break we dive right into our largest unit of study: PENGUINS! It is by far my favorite unit of study. As usual, our unit studies center on rich informational texts with a sprinkling of fiction texts as well. Check out the pictures below, as well as the downloads available that help support us during this unit study.
It’s the perfect time to focus on Nonfiction Text Features! We scour the books and create a class video or class book.

We learn about the importance of blubber using our special blubber mitt.
We record our learning in our science journals and on classroom anchor charts. Later on in the unit we use these sources of information when we write penguin reports.
Our wall anchor charts house A LOT of penguin facts. They are a constant source of reference during the entire unit. It’s fun to see classroom visitors reading them and learning things about penguins that they had not known before!
At the very end of our study, after we’ve written reports about ourselves and our penguin of choice, we create large, life-sized silhouettes for a “Penguins and Us” Parade in the hallway.
