Handwriting

Handwriting Meacham
Handwriting instruction begins in 4K at our school, with emphasis on letter formation at each grade level.  By the time students enter first grade, they have a good foundation, yet still need practice.  I start the year with a review of the Verbal Path Prompts, and we work through the lowercase letters.  By November, students are ready for individualized instruction and practice, if needed.

Individualized Homework:  I believe that if students are going to practice something at home, or in the classroom, they should receive practice content that is individualized and appropriate for them.  This includes handwriting.  I base student handwriting homework on what I see during daily math and writing.  I make observations on my iPad, using the app Evernote.  I then create a handwriting sheet that is to be returned the next day.  The handwriting homework is either handwritten by me, or I use MS Word to create it.  Some students receive handwriting homework the entire year, while others “graduate” from it in March (or even earlier).

Handwriting Online:  Watch or practice as each letter of the alphabet is formed or use the “magic” pencil to form letters, words, or sentences.  Very cool!

Handwriting Letter Sort: Students drag the letters from the bottom of the page to the appropriate column.  Letters are characterized by whether they are lowercase and tall, lowercase and short, or lowercase and diggers.  Feel free to customize the file to meet your needs.  I do NOT have the file for DNealiean.  Sorry.  Also, if you do not have the font that I used, here it is:  ABC Print.

Handwriting Apps:  Students utilize devices to practice letter formation.  I’ve compiled a list of apps for iOS , Google, and Android devices (we use all three platforms in our classroom).

Always start your letters at the top.

Always start your letters at the top.

When you write a letter,

you’ll get better, better, better,

if you always start your letters at the top!
